George, a middle-aged, bisexual friend of mine, living during the week away from his wife in a London bachelor pad, invited over a black male hook-up to insert the date-rape drug, GHB, into his anus.

He liaised with the young man on Grindr who arrived promptly. Three hours later George woke up with his trousers down and the young man gone, along with George’s cash and credit cards. One thing the drug is known to do is make you disinhibited and loquacious. George had willingly given over his PIN numbers and bank details before falling unconscious.

Two weeks later, George invited the young man over again, and as before, gave him his new PIN number and bank details, and then blacked out.

George might have thought, being of an optimistic nature, and having worked with young people in the theatre, that the young man was redeemable, that the two of them might have a reasonable conversation about the first event. George didn’t believe that other people were beyond persuasion or even redemption. He may have repeated the incident in the hope that there would be a different outcome. Or perhaps George just enjoyed being exploited and done over - it was punishment he sought.
