My sole ambition is to walk the relatively short distance to Gail's at the end of my street, where I intend to order an oat cappuccino and a cheese stick.

I am watching an actor sprawled on the floor, writhing in expressive agony, attempting to stage my accident. This is where I am; at the back of the Royal Court Theatre in Sloane Square, in a room where I ran writing workshops for years. These actors are rehearsing a version of my book, Shattered, for the stage.
I remember walking to this very theatre in the early eighties from my flat in Baron's Court, through a much shabbier London.
At that time, after getting up in the mornings, I would go straight to my desk and stay there until lunchtime. I never believed, and still don’t, in working in the afternoons, which is perhaps why my books are mercifully shorter than those of other authors.
