Dear Hanif,

Your grace, humour and humility throughout this living nightmare has been a huge source of comfort and inspiration to me. I lost my son a few weeks ago, and your wonderful words are one of the few things that have kept me going through this shitty time of grief. A heartfelt thank you. Please keep going. You have convinced me that tragedy and renewal go hand in hand.

Dear, no hands man,

I just discovered you today. I was in the laundry room waiting for my clothes to dry and I picked up a 2019 New Yorker. I read your short story and I was moved . Then I read diane Treisman’s interview with you. I am in a story club with George Saunders. I’m interested in how you write, how anyone writes, a short story that hits you in the gut. And then I read about your fall and hospitalization. My husband, Leo was a no-hands/ no-legs man too. He had ALS and passed away from the disease in 2018. Two years ago, I reconnected with an old friend. Our affair started with a hug which I needed because my husband couldn’t hug me anymore. And I just found out two weeks ago that he passed away too. I’m experiencing loss and like you trying to figure out how to keep going.

Connecting through stories has always been a way for me to learn about life, and my husband, Leo taught me how to find joy in tiny, everyday things.

I feel very lucky to have discovered your writing.

I live in Italy, Rome. Last night I went to see (again) My beautiful Laundrette. During a short presentation before the screening I was told you were hospitalised in Rome. I did not know. Now I'm here. I'm sooo sorry for what had happened to you. I send you all the love a fan of yours can send.

Bon courage.

Alessandro

Dear Hanif, your chronicles are my new year’s gift to myself. Thank you for your exacting words carrying so much kindness. Reading your shared thoughts feels like being there in the room with you. Straight up yarning without needing to utter anything. All ears and knowing eye contact. Yours is the most generous voice and this opportunity to respond is resplendent like a first date: enthusiastic nerves eager to self-censor and saying it anyway.

Hello, Hanif, I'm so glad that you are writing and letting us into that other country that you are willy-nilly inhabiting. I thought you might like to know that I'm mentioning you in my Substack newsletter https://bnrbookish.substack.com/publish Funny, You Don't Look Bookish, and embedding your link there as well. It goes out tomorrow morning. I'm going to read your book about your father in the weeks to come. Much love to you. Courage.
